Golden Knights Dismiss Bruce Cassidy, Appoint John Tortorella as New Coach

The Vegas Golden Knights have made a significant change to their coaching staff by firing Bruce Cassidy and appointing veteran coach John Tortorella. This decision comes with only eight games remaining in the 2025-26 NHL regular season, amid a disappointing performance by the team.

Bruce Cassidy’s Tenure with the Golden Knights

Bruce Cassidy led the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup championship in 2023 during his first season with the team. Over four seasons, he compiled a commendable record of 178 wins, 99 losses, and 43 overtime losses. His performance ranked fifth among NHL coaches during this period.

Despite the successes, the team has encountered challenges this season. The Golden Knights already have a franchise-high of 42 losses, with 16 games lost in overtime or shootouts. Currently, they hold third place in the Pacific Division, maintaining a precarious four-point cushion above the playoff cut line.

John Tortorella Takes the Helm

John Tortorella, who last coached the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2024-25 season, is now at the helm. With an extensive coaching career, he has a record of 770 wins, 648 losses, and 37 ties in the NHL. His accomplishments include winning the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004 and earning the Jack Adams Trophy as the league’s top coach during the same year.

Tortorella’s experience is expected to bolster the Golden Knights during this critical juncture of the season. He has also secured a total of 56 playoff victories across different teams, including Tampa Bay, New York, and Columbus.

Management’s Statement on the Coaching Change

Kelly McCrimmon, the Golden Knights’ general manager, expressed gratitude toward Cassidy in a public statement. “We thank Bruce Cassidy for his dedication to our hockey club and community over the past four seasons,” said McCrimmon. He acknowledged the achievement of bringing a Stanley Cup to Vegas and noted that Cassidy will be remembered fondly for his contributions.

McCrimmon emphasized the need for change, stating that with Tortorella’s championship experience, they are optimistic about improving the team’s performance during the remaining games. The organization believes Tortorella’s leadership can steer them back to the level of play expected from the Golden Knights.
