Order Your Own Eames House Soon: Discover How
The Eames House, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, will soon have a new series of made-to-order models available for purchase. This iconic structure, located in Los Angeles, is noted for its black beams and colorful, Mondrian-inspired panels. It was part of the Case Study project that redefined modern family living after World War II.
Introducing the Eames Pavilion System
The Eames Office has launched the Eames Pavilion System, allowing individuals to create their own Eames-inspired residences or commercial spaces. This project aims to adhere to the principles established by the Eames couple.
Significant smoke damage from the Palisades Fire in 2025 delayed the project, but the structure has been restored. Eames Demetrios, the architects’ grandson, now oversees the Eames Office. He partnered with Eckart Maise, a former chief design officer at Vitra, to bring the modular concepts of the Eames legacy to life.
The Vision Behind Prefab Architecture
Research shows that Charles and Ray Eames were always exploring scalable systems in their work. This idea was particularly evident in the Shelter house, a planned timber design intended for mass production and local assembly. Maise described it as the “supermarket house,” demonstrating the couple’s vision for affordable housing.
Exhibition at Triennale di Milano
This year, the Eames Office will showcase the Eames Pavilion System at the Triennale di Milano. This exhibition will highlight both the one- and two-story build options based on the architects’ designs, along with new research on Eames creations.
- Availability: One-story options will be made available for purchase this fall, while two-story variants are planned for release later.
- Global Reach: The pavilions will be offered in over 80 countries, made by design brand Kettal.
- Pricing: The starting cost is $2,800 per square meter (approximately $260 per square foot). For a typical 2,000-square-foot home, the price would be about $518,000.
Despite earlier challenges in finding partners for shipping and local permits, the Eames team has ensured a smooth assembly process with Kettal’s engineers on-site. They emphasized the importance of a reliable assembly experience, moving beyond traditional DIY methods.
Unique Design Elements
The pavilions will not be direct replicas of the Eames House. Instead, they incorporate design aspects from the Entenza House and concepts envisioned for other projects. Features will include recognizable black beams, sliding screens, and customizable exterior options.
- Customization Options: Users can personalize their pavilions with various window styles, color-blocks, and panels.
- Size Flexibility: The smallest model could serve as a meeting space, while larger designs could accommodate expansive needs, limited to a maximum height of two stories.
A new book titled “The Eames Houses” from Phaidon, focusing on the architectural frameworks of Charles and Ray Eames, is set to release this spring. Eames Demetrios views this project as an extension of his grandparents’ legacy, emphasizing their desire to universalize their design principles.
The introduction of the Eames Pavilion System showcases a modern interpretation of the Eames philosophy, aiming to make quality design accessible to a broader audience.
