Omniplex begins recruitment drive for Glasgow staff for world’s tallest cinema
omniplex has launched applications to staff the Renfrew Street site as it prepares to reopen the world’s tallest cinema. The company is recruiting a permanent, full-time general manager on a £43, 000 salary and wider front-of-house roles to run the 18-screen complex. The push follows the purchase of the building by Clydebankbridge Ltd, a subsidiary of the Irish cinema chain Omniplex, and the closure of the former tenant; the venue is set to reopen in mid-2026 (ET).
Omniplex recruitment drive and the general manager role
The advertised general manager position is permanent and full time, with a listed salary of £43, 000. The job advert from Omniplex Cinemas calls for “an exceptional general manager to lead our landmark cinema located on Renfrew Street in the heart of Glasgow city centre. ” It adds that the location is “home to the world’s tallest cinema, delivering a premium cinema experience across multiple floors” and seeks “a dynamic, hands on leader with a passion for hospitality, entertainment and guest experience. ”
The recruitment drive signals the start of staffing ahead of reopening plans. Cineworld previously occupied the building for two decades before its lease was terminated after the site was bought in May last year; Cineworld closed months after the sale. Clydebankbridge Ltd now owns the site and is identified in official notices as a subsidiary of Omniplex.
Renovation plans, screens and amenities
Omniplex has outlined upgrades that will reshape the Renfrew Street venue. Renovations will include fully reclining auditoriums, upgraded laser projection and sound systems, and three giant “OmniplexMAXX” screens equipped with Barco 4K Laser projection and Dolby Atmos sound. The complex currently has 18 screens and will also feature a 23-foot airstream trailer called Joe’s Food Truck serving food and drink.
Company statements describe the site as a landmark with deep entertainment history and position the upgrades as a blend of heritage and modern premium facilities. The planned reopening window is mid-2026 (ET), giving the operator time to complete construction and put recruited staff in place before doors reopen to the public.
What happens next
Omniplex will progress recruitment and fit-out work in the months ahead, advertising senior and operational roles to populate the venue prior to the mid-2026 reopening (ET). Paul John Anderson, director of Omniplex Cinemas, said the Renfrew Street cinema is “one of Glasgow’s most iconic cultural landmarks and a cornerstone of the wider UK cinema industry, ” and that the firm is “proud to be welcoming this historic site into the Omniplex family. ”
As hiring continues, the immediate next steps will be appointment of the general manager and further public listings for staff roles, followed by phased completion of the stated upgrades. Observers and prospective applicants will be watching how omniplex stages the reopening and how quickly the refurbished, multi-floor venue returns to regular screenings and events.
