Police shoot man in chest after confrontation in Goodwood
The word police entered the Goodwood home before sunrise, and by the time the scene quieted, a man was in hospital with a chest wound and officers were left facing a traumatic event that unfolded in minutes. Tasmania Police said the man, 34, was shot after a confrontation outside the residence on Sunday morning in Hobart’s southern suburbs.
What happened during the Goodwood confrontation?
Officers were first called to the property at about 4. 30am ET after the owners believed there was a trespasser. The situation escalated before 6am ET, when the man allegedly threatened to use a firearm during a confrontation outside the home. Tasmania Police Southern District Commander Jason Elmer said about 10 officers attended the scene and pepper spray was used before two officers fired their weapons.
Mr Elmer said the officers acted while believing the man was armed. “This was a very dynamic situation… at the time they discharged their firearms they were firmly of the belief that he was in the possession of a firearm, ” he said. Police later established that he did not have a firearm.
Why does this case matter beyond one suburban street?
The immediate facts are local, but the human weight is wider. A call meant to address a suspected trespasser turned into a shooting, a hospital transfer, and a professional standards investigation. That sequence shows how quickly fear, uncertainty, and split-second judgment can shape an outcome for everyone involved. The man was alone at the property and is a relative of the owners, adding another layer of strain to an already volatile morning. In moments like this, the difference between what officers believe and what is later confirmed can be life-changing.
The man was given first aid at the scene and taken to hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. For the officers, Mr Elmer said the incident will not end with the last report filed. “This a traumatic event… they have had to take action this morning that will no doubt imprint upon them for the rest of their lives, ” he said.
What is being done now?
A professional standards investigation is under way. That process is central because it will examine how the call unfolded, why the confrontation intensified, and what officers understood at the moment they fired. In the meantime, Tasmania Police has framed the incident as one in which officers believed they faced an armed threat, even though the man was later found not to be carrying a firearm.

The scene in Goodwood remains defined by that gap between perception and fact. A home, a trespass complaint, and a dawn response became the setting for a decision that changed lives in seconds. The man is alive, the officers are under review, and the question left behind is how a call built around suspicion became a shooting before the morning fully began.
