Eight Players Transfer from Tennessee Women’s Basketball Team, None Returning

The Tennessee women’s basketball team faces a significant transition as the program prepares for the upcoming season. All eight players, with remaining eligibility, have opted to transfer after a challenging year. The team concluded the past season with a disappointing record of 16-14, which included an eight-game losing streak and marked the first time the program did not secure a win in March.

Transfers from Tennessee Women’s Basketball Team

On Monday, freshman guard Jaida Civil announced her decision to enter the transfer portal via an Instagram post, further compounding the team’s roster challenges. The Lady Vols, already set to graduate four seniors, are now left without any returning players who have experience with the program.

Players Who Have Transferred

  • Jaida Civil – Announced entry into the transfer portal.
  • Kaniya Boyd – Currently seeking a new school.
  • Lauren Hurst – Currently seeking a new school.
  • Deniya Prawl – Currently seeking a new school.
  • Talaysia Cooper – Currently seeking a new school.
  • Alyssa Latham – Transferring to Virginia Tech.

In addition, Oliviyah Edwards, a top recruit, has decommitted from the university. With only Gabby Minus remaining as a confirmed player for next season, the team faces a complete overhaul.

Challenges in the Previous Season

This exodus of players reflects a tumultuous season for head coach Kim Caldwell. After leading the team to the Sweet 16 in her inaugural season, Caldwell’s second year was marked by significant struggles. The Lady Vols suffered a historic defeat against South Carolina, losing 93-50, and also faced a 30-point loss to UConn.

Despite historically being a powerhouse in women’s basketball, Tennessee has not secured a championship title since 2008. Following this disappointing season, Caldwell has described the next few years as critical for rebuilding the program and has recognized that both the players and she herself deserve better than the performance witnessed last year.

With a $4 million buyout clause in her contract through 2030, Caldwell remains under pressure to turn the program around in the coming seasons. As the team transitions, fans will be eager to see how the future unfolds for the Lady Vols.
