Devils Coach, Players Accept Responsibility for Fitzgerald’s GM Dismissal
Following the recent dismissal of General Manager Tom Fitzgerald, the New Jersey Devils have expressed collective accountability for the team’s underperformance. Players, including captain Nico Hischier and center Jack Hughes, acknowledged their role in the situation, emphasizing their commitment to the franchise.
Devils Players Reflect on Fitzgerald’s Dismissal
Nico Hischier articulated the sentiments shared by many in the locker room. “We understand the business here,” he stated. “We weren’t performing the way we should have, and then in a business like that, things happen.” Hischier’s words reflected disappointment but also gratitude toward Fitzgerald for his leadership and support.
Since Fitzgerald became the full-time GM, the Devils have recorded a record of 218 wins, 204 losses, and 39 overtime losses. During his tenure, the team achieved significant milestones, including a franchise-high 52 wins and 112 points in the 2022-23 season. Nonetheless, playoff appearances have been limited, with the team qualifying only twice in five seasons and failing to advance past the second round.
Recent Team Performance
The Devils faced a particularly challenging stretch from November 18 to February 26, compiling a record of 15-25-1. This slump put their playoff aspirations at serious risk. Although they managed a recovery with a record of 12-5-1 in subsequent games, their postseason hopes remain uncertain.
Player Accountability and Trust
- Nico Hischier: Expressed disappointment in team performance and gratitude for Fitzgerald.
- Jack Hughes: Emphasized the players’ role in the team’s results. He expressed sadness over Fitzgerald’s departure, recognizing his contributions.
- Jesper Bratt: Acknowledged Fitzgerald’s trust in the core players and highlighted the lasting impact of his contributions to the team.
- Timo Meier: Part of the core built by Fitzgerald, reinforcing the sentiment of respectful acknowledgment from players.
As the franchise looks ahead, managing partner David Blitzer labeled the upcoming offseason as “critical” for the team’s future. The search for a new GM is paramount, with players expressing confidence in the ownership’s decision-making abilities. Hughes remarked, “I know I trust our ownership group, and they’re smart people.”
The mechanism of change has begun, and the players are keenly aware of their responsibilities in shaping the team’s destiny. While Fitzgerald’s departure is a significant loss, the foundation he laid is expected to influence the Devils for seasons to come.
