WGA Secures $321 Million Health Fund, Enhanced Residuals, AI Discussions

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) recently announced significant developments in their negotiations with major studios. This new agreement introduces a $321 million health fund, marking a historic increase in support for writers’ healthcare. The changes aim to enhance the sustainability of the health plan amidst rising costs.

Major Highlights of the WGA Contract

  • Health Fund Contribution: The studios are contributing a record $321 million to the health fund, the largest in history.
  • Increased Streaming Residuals: A new success bonus raises payments for popular streaming shows from 50% to 75% of the base residual.
  • Annual Rate Increases: Writers will receive annual increases of 1.5%, 3%, 3%, and 3% over the four-year term.
  • Changes in Payments for AI Use: The agreement includes ongoing discussions about artificial intelligence, but denies payment for AI training of writers’ work.

Boosting Health Plan Sustainability

In response to the significant deficits that the WGA health fund has experienced—totaling $200 million over four years—the new contract is designed to restore financial stability. The WGA acknowledged that while the studios are providing more funding, writers will also face increased costs in premiums and other healthcare fees.

Premiums will rise, with individual coverage increasing to $75 and family coverage to $200. Currently, the best rates in place are $0 and $50, respectively. Out-of-pocket maximums are set to increase from $1,000 to $2,500, while deductibles will rise from $400 to $500 for individuals and from $1,200 to $1,500 for families.

Reforms on Coverage Accrual

The new contract includes a significant overhaul of the extended coverage system. Writers must now meet a $200,000 earning threshold in a year to begin accumulating points for extended coverage. This is a notable change from the previous requirement, which allowed writers to start accumulating points at a much lower threshold of $46,759.

These changes aim to mitigate the strain on the health plan while ensuring writers have access to necessary care without excessively high costs.

Provisions Against “Free Work”

The agreement also tackles the issue of “free work,” where writers submit multiple drafts prior to payment. Producers are reminded that only they may request rewrites, helping to protect writers from unpaid labor. Further provisions offer TV pilot writers more flexibility and higher minimum rates for extensive rewrites, known as “page-one rewrites.”

Timeline for Ratification

WGA members will vote to ratify this new deal from April 16 to April 24. The leaders of WGA East and West have unanimously approved the agreement, expressing pride in securing this substantial health funding and enhancing writers’ compensation in the evolving industry landscape.
