“Baywatch Expands Filming at Venice Beach”

Producers of the “Baywatch” reboot are expanding filming plans at Venice Beach. Recent meetings with city and county officials were fruitful, resulting in updated filming permits. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Traci Park expressed her satisfaction, stating, “Everybody came away from this meeting feeling really, really good.”

Enhancing Filming Opportunities

The “Baywatch” series is viewed as a key initiative to revive production activities in Los Angeles. It received a $21 million tax credit from the California Film Commission last fall, signaling strong government support for local filming.

Permit Approval and Specifications

  • The California Coastal Commission approved the film permit on February 6.
  • Initially, the production was allocated 27 parking spaces by the beach and 177 spaces at a nearby lot.

Since filming commenced in early March, it became evident that more resources were required. Councilwoman Park noted that the production has significantly exceeded its initial estimates, necessitating almost double the parking spaces at the designated beach lot. Furthermore, there are plans to allow overnight vehicle parking, a change from the current restrictions that limit parking to 4 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Film Schedule and Coordination

The production schedule is set to run through July 16 and involves multiple locations within the Los Angeles coastal area. Although the current permit restricts nighttime filming, Park assured that officials are prepared to accommodate requests for expanded filming hours.

Commitment from Local Officials

The L.A. County Department of Beaches and Harbors oversees permit enforcement. Supervisor Lindsey Horvath emphasized that both the production and public officials are committed to ensuring a successful filming season. This includes potential improvements in communication and coordination regarding permit modifications.

  • L.A.’s transportation commission will offer a 20% discount on city parking lot rentals.
  • A small portion of the beach, approximately 300 square feet, will be temporarily closed for filming.
  • Provisions are in place to maintain public access, protect wildlife, and prevent sand erosion.

This positive collaboration came after rumors on social media suggested that filming would be relocated away from Venice Beach. However, city figures, including Mayor Karen Bass, reaffirmed their commitment to facilitating filming in Los Angeles, highlighting their efforts to reduce bureaucratic obstacles.

“I’m pleased that ‘Baywatch’ will continue to film right here on Venice Beach,” Bass tweeted, reiterating the city’s dedication to being an accessible filming destination.
