‘Jumanji 3’ Unveiled with First Look at CinemaCon

The highly anticipated third installment of the Jumanji franchise has been officially titled Jumanji: Open World. The announcement came during Sony’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, where stars Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, and Jack Black unveiled the first trailer for the film.

First Trailer Insights

The trailer, exclusive to attendees, starts with a computer repairman played by Lamorne Morris entering the home of Janice, portrayed by Marin Hinkle. Within the house, he discovers an old video game console, setting the scene for supernatural occurrences.

The audience is treated to ominous clouds forming outside as ostriches run through the streets, illustrating the crossover between the Jumanji world and reality. The trailer then introduces Spencer, played by Alex Wolff, along with his friends in a restaurant, where they encounter Spencer’s grandfather, played by Danny DeVito.

A Familiar Cast in Unique Situations

In the storyline, Dwayne Johnson’s avatar, Dr. Bravestone, appears unexpectedly with a Spanish accent. The Jumanji characters, including avatars of Hart, Black, and Karen Gillan, manifest in “demo mode,” hinting that they are not in the game.

This prompts the teenage heroes to return to the game world, where they must navigate threats to save both Jumanji and their own world.

Franchise Background

Jumanji: Open World follows Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), both of which successfully revived the classic concept for a modern audience.

  • Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle grossed over $962 million worldwide.
  • Jumanji: The Next Level earned over $801 million globally.

Both previous films starred Johnson, Hart, Black, and Gillan, with their teenage counterparts played by Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Ser’Darius Blain.

Tribute and Humor

The new installment features a tribute to Robin Williams, containing an Easter egg involving “one half of the original dice from the original Jumanji.” Johnson expressed that this film was dedicated to Williams. The trio entertained the audience with playful banter, highlighting their camaraderie.

Character Developments and Direction

In this adventure, the actors reveal that the traditional game rules will not apply. They will portray three distinct versions of their characters. Jake Kasdan returns as director, collaborating with writers Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.

Producers for Jumanji: Open World include Matt Tolmach, Kasdan, Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia, with executive producers like Barry Waldman and Van Allsburg. The film is set to be released by Columbia Pictures on Christmas Day.

Anticipated Release

With the release slated for December 25, 2023, Jumanji: Open World aims to capture both new audiences and longtime fans of the franchise. The film promises a blend of action and comedy, appealing to a diverse viewing crowd.
