CBS Replaces ‘Late Show’ with ‘Comics Unleashed,’ Says David Letterman

David Letterman has expressed his views regarding CBS’s recent programming change, which sees The Late Show With Stephen Colbert replaced by Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen. The announcement was made during an appearance on The Barbara Gaines Show, where Letterman shared insights from his extensive experience in late-night television.

Change in Late-Night Programming

The Late Show, which Letterman hosted for over 20 years from 1993 until 2015, will air its final episode on May 21. Starting May 22, CBS will launch Comics Unleashed in the 11:35 p.m. time slot, followed by the Allen-produced show Funny You Should Ask at 12:35 a.m.

Letterman’s Perspective

Letterman believes that CBS’s strategy reflects a desire to cut costs while remaining profitable. He noted that Byron Allen will purchase airtime for Comics Unleashed. “They charge Byron Allen some reasonable price,” Letterman stated, emphasizing that it allows CBS to save money while generating revenue.

Letterman praised the concept of Comics Unleashed, which will feature a panel of comedians discussing humorous topics. “It’s all panel. Nobody’s doing any stand-up, except they’re seated doing stand-up,” he explained.

Byron Allen’s Vision

Byron Allen, the founder and CEO of Allen Media Group, also shared his excitement about the programming shift. He remarked, “I created and launched Comics Unleashed 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love — make people laugh.”

Expectations for the Future

With this transition, CBS aims to capitalize on late-night viewership by leveraging Allen’s established brand. Allen’s approach involves not only producing content but also handling advertising sales for both Comics Unleashed and Funny You Should Ask.

  • Last episode of The Late Show: May 21
  • Comics Unleashed premieres: May 22 at 11:35 p.m.
  • Funny You Should Ask time slot: 12:35 a.m.

This new venture represents a shift in CBS’s late-night strategy, aiming to balance entertainment and profit while giving comedians a platform to showcase their talents.
