2026 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight Reveals Star-Studded Lineup

The 2026 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight has unveiled an impressive lineup featuring 19 feature films and nine short and medium-length works. This year’s selection was drawn from a remarkable 1,800 submissions. The event will run from May 13 to 23, coinciding with the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Opening Film: Butterfly Jam

The opening film will be “Butterfly Jam,” directed by Kantemir Balagov. This drama, set in New Jersey, stars Barry Keoghan and Riley Keough. It tells the story of a teenager in the Circassian community who dreams of becoming a wrestler. However, his aspirations take a turn when his father’s plans go awry. This marks Balagov’s first English-language project after his acclaimed film “Beanpole” debuted at Cannes in 2019.

“Butterfly Jam” is produced by AR Content, Why Not Productions, and Goodfellas, which is also responsible for international sales. The cast includes Harry Melling, who was recently seen in “Pillion” alongside Alexander Skarsgård.

Highlights from the Lineup

  • Atonement: Directed by Reed Van Dyk, this film features Kenneth Branagh and Hiam Abbass and focuses on an Iraqi war veteran.
  • Clarissa: A reimagining of “Mrs Dalloway” by Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri, featuring Sophie Okonedo and David Oyelowo.
  • Dora: Directed by July Jung, this film stars Sakura Ando and K-pop actress Kim Do-yeon.
  • Le Vertige: Directed by Quentin Dupieux, this 3D motion capture animation involves a cast of well-known voices.

Artistic Director Julien Rejl emphasized a shift in selection criteria this year. While previous years highlighted lesser-known talents, this edition includes several films from established directors, ensuring a star-studded lineup.

Newcomers and First Films

This year’s selection features six debut films, including:

  • 9 Temples To Heaven: Directed by Sompot Chidgasornpongse, this film reflects his collaboration with Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
  • Gabin: A documentary by Maxence Voiseux, marking his first film.

Other notable new entries include “Atonement” and “Death Has No Master” by Jorge Thielen Armand. The variety within the lineup showcases a wide array of genres and international perspectives.

Special Celebrations

In a notable recognition, Claire Denis will be awarded the honorary Golden Carriage on May 13 during the opening ceremony. This gesture highlights her contributions to cinema and the film community.

As anticipation builds for the 2026 edition, the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight promises an exciting showcase of diverse storytelling and filmmaking talent.
