Sun Run 2026: What to know about the Vancouver traffic disruptions this weekend
The sun run 2026 is set for Sunday, April 19, and Vancouver drivers should brace for a long list of closures and delays across the downtown core. Organizers say 55, 000 participants are signed up, making this one of the city’s biggest traffic-impacting events of the weekend. The race will shut down key roads and bridges from 8 a. m. to 2 p. m. ET.
Road closures will hit downtown, bridges and False Creek
The biggest disruption from sun run 2026 will center on the Burrard and Cambie bridges, as well as streets on the north and south shores of False Creek. Organizers are warning of traffic delays throughout downtown Vancouver, with dozens of streets closed in the West End, Kitsilano/Fairview and the False Creek area.
The Burrard Bridge will be closed to traffic from 8 a. m. to 12: 30 p. m. ET. The Cambie Bridge Pacific Boulevard eastbound exit off-ramp will be closed to all traffic from 5 a. m. to 2 p. m. ET, and the 6th Avenue East exit from the Granville Bridge will be closed from 8: 30 a. m. to 12: 30 p. m. ET. A full list of road closures has been made available, but the central message for drivers is simple: expect delays and avoid the area if possible.
Where the race goes and when the runners start
Participants will start at Burrard and Georgia Street, head down Georgia, turn left on Denman and onto Pacific Avenue, then cross the Burrard Street Bridge. From there, runners will move up Fir Street, continue onto 4th Avenue and travel east on 6th Avenue before looping around False Creek and finishing near BC Place.
Three races are scheduled on Sunday: the children’s mini Sun Run starts at 8 a. m. ET, the competitive wheelchairs begin at 8: 50 a. m. ET, and the 10 km Sun Run starts at 9 a. m. ET. The timing means the busiest period for road users will overlap with the morning commute and much of the late morning.
Transit, expo access and other options for getting around
TransLink will begin service early on Sunday to help participants get downtown, with a special West Coast Express service running. Start times for the Expo Line, Millennium Line, Canada Line and SeaBus are part of the event planning, giving people an alternative to driving into the affected areas.
Race packages can be picked up at the Vancouver Sun Run Expo at the Vancouver Convention Centre East, which will also host more than 50 health and wellness exhibitors. The expo is open Friday, April 17, from 11 a. m. to 7 p. m. ET and Saturday, April 18, from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. ET. There will also be a bike valet service at BC Place, Gate C, from 7 a. m. to 1 p. m. ET.
What drivers and spectators should expect next
No major shift in timing has been announced, so the main plan remains the same: closures begin early, peak impacts run through the morning, and traffic should remain slow around the downtown core until the road network reopens later in the day. For anyone crossing the city on Sunday, sun run 2026 will reshape travel patterns for several hours, especially near the bridges and around False Creek.
