Zay Flowers Claims Ravens’ Practice was Tough; Jesse Minter Plans Changes
The Baltimore Ravens are poised for a shift in their practice approach under new head coach Jesse Minter. According to wide receiver Zay Flowers, this change is essential for the well-being of the players.
Zay Flowers Discusses Ravens’ Tough Practices
In a recent interview on the 4th and South podcast, Flowers expressed his anticipation for a more player-friendly regimen compared to the previous methods employed by former head coach John Harbaugh. He emphasized the impact of high-contact practices on the team’s overall health and performance.
Concerns Over Previous Practice Regimen
Flowers highlighted that Harbaugh often conducted practices in full pads as frequently as permitted by NFL regulations. By the end of the season, this relentless schedule left many players physically exhausted. He stated:
- “Full pads all the time.”
- “We’re doing one-on-ones in Week 17; everybody’s tired.”
He acknowledged that the heavy workload contributed significantly to the injuries the team faced. “We don’t manage that workload,” Flowers admitted. “That’s why we had a lot of injuries.”
New Coach Jesse Minter’s Vision
In his first conversation with Minter, who was formerly an assistant coach, Flowers sought clarity on the upcoming practice structure. Minter reassured him about a more balanced approach. “You’re going to get your work, but it’s going to be a little easier on your body,” Flower noted from their discussion. “You’re going to be fresher for the game.”
This approach may significantly benefit the Ravens as they prepare for the upcoming season. It also hints that the coaching style could create a more positive environment for player health and performance.
While Ravens players seem ready to embrace these changes, the adjustment could pose challenges for other teams, such as the Giants, who may face a more traditional practice structure.
