Memorial Stadium Renovation Resurfaces with Hefty Price Tag

Memorial Stadium, the iconic home of Nebraska football, is set for a significant renovation with an estimated price tag of $600 million. The proposal, known as the “Big Red Rebuild,” was recently introduced ahead of a crucial April 24 meeting of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. The current plan marks an increase from a previous proposal in 2023, which had an estimated cost of $450 million.

Details of the Big Red Rebuild Proposal

The updated renovation plan encompasses several key areas within Memorial Stadium. Here are some of the major components:

  • South Stadium: To be demolished and rebuilt, including 23,000 seats, a large scoreboard, and designated areas for students and the band.
  • West Stadium: Significant updates including new premium seating, upgraded restrooms, and renovations to the suite levels.
  • East Stadium: Will receive replacement seating and modifications to comply with code requirements.
  • General Improvements: Installation of 360-degree concourse connections at various levels and enhanced food service options.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The renovation project is expected to create more than 7,300 jobs and generate an estimated $1.1 billion in economic benefits for the state of Nebraska. Funding for the initiative will come from a combination of $250 million in philanthropic support and $350 million through private bond financing. Additionally, the stadium renovations are projected to yield $95 million in new revenue.

Timeline for Renovation

Construction is scheduled to commence after the 2026 football season, with completion targeted for the 2028 season. The renovations will raise the stadium’s capacity to 80,000, reducing it by 6,000 seats from current numbers.

Previous Proposal Comparison

The last proposal, introduced by former Nebraska athletics director Trev Alberts, included many similar features but was set at a lower budget. Alberts’ plan was halted, allowing new athletics director Troy Dannen to evaluate a more comprehensive approach that led to the current proposal.

Historic Significance of Memorial Stadium

Built in 1923, Memorial Stadium has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years, originally starting with a capacity of 31,080. Significant expansions occurred in the 1960s and early 2000s, with peak capacity reaching 87,167 in 2013. Currently, the stadium holds 85,458 fans, down from these peak numbers due to minor updates.

The university aims to ensure Memorial Stadium not only maintains its historical significance but also serves future generations with enhanced facilities and fan experiences.
