Practical Magic 2 Gets First Look As Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Reunite at CinemaCon

Practical magic was the message from Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as they stepped onto the Warner Bros. CinemaCon stage on Tuesday, where the pair teased the sequel to their 1998 fantasy film. The appearance gave fans the first clear glimpse of what Practical Magic 2 is building toward, with the sisters’ return framed as a homecoming, a curse, and a family reckoning. The film is set for theaters worldwide on September 11.

What the first look revealed

The opening of the panel centered on the original film’s spirit, then quickly turned to the new story. Kidman said viewers can expect “midnight margaritas, jumping off the roof and also have our past catching up with us, ” adding that the family and its destinies remain at the heart of the sequel. Bullock said coming back “felt like we came back to a home that we once lived in. ”

Practical magic also came through in the trailer, which returns to the Owens house and shows a cup stirring itself. In the clip, the sisters joke to a character played by Lee Pace, “Everyone we love dies a really horrible death. It’s not great for the Tinder bio. ” The trailer, set to Harry Nilsson’s “Coconut Song, ” leans into romance, family, magic, mayhem, and younger generations.

Inside the reunion

Bullock said, “We rebuilt the original house on the cliff, ” adding that the production filled it with “many old and new characters” and brought Alice Hoffman’s Book of Magic to life. Kidman echoed that sentiment, saying, “Home is what this is, ” and adding that returning to the characters “really has been magical. ”

The sequel reintroduces Sally Owens, played by Bullock, and Gillian Owens, played by Kidman, as part of a multi-generational family of witches cursed to be loveless for centuries. In this new chapter, they attempt to break a spell by confronting dark secrets and sacrificing for each other. Practical magic remains the engine of the story, but the stakes are now tied to family inheritance as much as romance.

Practical Magic 2 cast and creative team

The new film is directed by Susanne Bier, with Akiva Goldsman returning to write the script alongside Georgia Pritchett. The cast also includes returning performers Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, plus Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, Solly McLeod, and Joey King as one of Sally’s daughters.

Bullock, Kidman, and Denise Di Novi are producing the sequel. The original film was directed by Griffin Dunne, and this follow-up is positioned as a direct continuation of the Owens family story rather than a fresh reset. Practical magic is once again being used to bridge the original film’s nostalgia with a new generation of characters.

What comes next

With the first look now out and the release date set, the next major step will be how the campaign develops around the return of the Owens sisters and the new cast around them. The trailer suggests a story focused on inherited curses, family bonds, and the cost of breaking fate. For fans waiting since the original film, Practical magic is back at the center of the conversation, and the countdown to September 11 has begun.
