Car Rental Heiress Assaulted in Hollywood Hills Home Invasion
Car rental became the focus of a violent Hollywood Hills case Thursday night, when an elderly woman was robbed and strangled inside her home on Lookout Mountain Avenue in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department responded around 8 p. m. ET, and the woman survived after being hospitalized in stable condition. Neighbors identified the victim as Margaux Mirkin, and police said the suspects fled before officers arrived.
What happened inside the home
Police said robbers entered the residence, attacked the woman, strangled her, and took jewelry from inside the home. The incident unfolded in the 8500 block of Lookout Mountain Avenue, not far from Wonderland Elementary School, in a neighborhood that residents described as quiet and private. Investigators have not released a description of the victim’s injuries beyond confirming that she remained alive and stable after the attack.
Three masked suspects were described as demanding property, including money and jewelry, before the assault. Detectives believe a large amount of cash and jewelry was stolen. The suspects, described as masked men wearing black hoodies, left the scene in a white Honda Accord, while the search for them continued.
Neighbors identify the victim as a private figure
Neighbors identified the woman as Margaux Mirkin, heir to the Budget Rent a Car fortune. The business was founded by her late father, and neighbors described Mirkin as extremely private. One resident, Lee Bridges, said the attack was “an absolute shock” and added that crime in the area usually involves mailbox or car break-ins rather than a violent home invasion. Another resident, Chris, said the dead-end street and sparse foot traffic make it vulnerable to break-ins.
Bridges also said Mirkin was “one of our normal neighbors” and described her as a senior living a retired life. He said neighbors intended to keep checking on her and wished her the best. Police have not confirmed whether the attack was targeted, even though some neighbors suspect it may have been because of the victim’s wealth and the property itself.
Investigation continues as community concern grows
The Los Angeles Police Department has not said whether the suspects knew the victim or had been watching the property. Officers arrived after the robbers had already fled, and police said they had no more information to release on the suspects. The case comes amid a broader run of recent burglaries and robberies across Southern California and the San Fernando Valley.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass ordered additional police patrols in parts of the valley last week as concern has grown among residents and business owners. For now, investigators are working with limited public details, and the car rental connection has drawn added attention to a case that started as a home invasion and quickly turned into a serious assault. The next developments will likely center on suspect identification, the stolen property, and whether detectives determine the attack was planned.
What happens next in the car rental case
Police are expected to continue reviewing the escape route, the white Honda Accord, and any nearby witness accounts as the investigation moves forward. The car rental case has already shaken a neighborhood that considered itself relatively calm, and residents say they are watching closely as authorities search for answers.
