have added 19 Ford Mustang GT patrol vehicles to their fleet, and the first of them will begin patrols in the Capital Region this week. One of the cars is a prototype that has already been used for training and evaluation.

The remaining vehicles are being outfitted with emergency lighting, communications and safety equipment before they are deployed statewide. State Police say the Mustangs will be used to confront aggressive driving, excessive speeding and other hazardous behavior on New York roads.

Superintendent said the goal is to give troopers the tools they need to safely and effectively carry out their mission. He said the Mustang will strengthen traffic enforcement while supporting the department’s commitment to protecting the public on New York’s roadways.

The new patrol cars arrive as State Police continue shifting their fleet toward SUVs, but officials said the Mustang GTs are part of that transition and cost about 30% less than their SUV counterparts. That lower price helps explain why the agency is adding a sports car to a fleet that is otherwise moving in the opposite direction.

The tension is in what comes next: the Mustangs are not a replacement for the broader fleet plan, but a targeted enforcement tool. If the early patrols deliver the kind of traffic enforcement the agency wants, the cars could become a visible part of how State Police respond to dangerous driving across the state.
