Davis Schneider was in the mix again while George Springer edged closer to a return. The Blue Jays outfielder hit and ran on Tuesday for a second straight day, putting him in position to be activated for Wednesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox if all goes well.
Springer’s path back
Springer has been out since April 11 with a broken big toe, and his return would give Toronto its regular option back at the top of the order. Before the injury, he was slashing.185/.290/.370 with two homers and four doubles, a line that still pointed to everyday production even as the numbers lagged behind his standards.
John Schneider said Tuesday that Springer could be activated for Wednesday’s game against Boston if the final step goes smoothly. The club has been waiting for a healthy body to stabilize the leadoff spot, and Springer’s work on the bases and at the plate is the clearest sign that the decision is close.
Blue Jays lineup shuffle
Toronto has spread the leadoff duty around while Springer has been out, with Ernie Clement, Nathan Lukes, Myles Straw and Davis Schneider all getting turns there. A recent lineup shift also showed how the Blue Jays have kept adjusting around the absence, moving pieces to cover the top of the order while Springer recovers.
That shuffle has come during a difficult April on the injury front, with Addison Barger and a handful of pitchers missing significant time as well. The Blue Jays have kept moving players through different spots, but Springer’s return would end the need to patch together the first plate appearance of the game with multiple options.
Boston Red Sox matchup
The timing is pointed. Toronto faced Boston on Tuesday, and Trey Yesavage made his 2026 debut against the Red Sox on the same day Springer continued his recovery work. If Springer gets the nod Wednesday, the Blue Jays would regain a leadoff hitter who has already been used to set the tone before the toe injury interrupted his season.
For Toronto, the immediate takeaway is straightforward: the lineup could change at the top as early as Wednesday, and Davis Schneider may soon move back into a supporting role there if Springer is cleared. That gives the Blue Jays a cleaner look against Boston and removes one more daily adjustment from a team that has spent April reshuffling around injuries.
