Trump stopped mid-speech to call attention to McIlroy, saying, “Where is Rory McIlroy, can you stand up please?” He followed with, “That was unconquerable courage. That was very good, Rory,” and then added, “I had to interrupt my speech because I watched that man win a tournament that was a tough, that was a tough one.”

The praise landed only weeks after McIlroy won his second consecutive Masters earlier in April 2026. That victory made him the fourth player in the major championship’s history to defend at Augusta National successfully, and Tiger Woods was the last player to do it before him, in 2001 and 2002.
McIlroy’s appearance at the state dinner also came after he had skipped the last three PGA Tour events following his Augusta win. He had already sat out the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral that week, even as the limited-field event began Thursday with Scottie Scheffler, the World No. 1, headlining the field.
Trump and McIlroy
Trump and McIlroy have played golf together in the past, including once in February 2025. That history gave the dinner a sharper edge than a routine handshake line, with the president turning a formal royal visit into a public salute for one of golf’s biggest names.
After the shoutout, Trump told McIlroy, “Congratulations, very proud of you. Now I’ll get back to my speech, all right.” For McIlroy, the night added another high-profile moment to a spring already shaped by his Masters defense and the weeks he has spent away from the PGA Tour schedule.
