Garrett Crochet Lands on 15-Day IL With Left Shoulder Inflammation
Garrett Crochet went on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation, and the Red Sox moved quickly to cover the spot. The left-hander said he was pretty confident he would be back after a minimum stay.
Garrett Crochet and the Rotation
The move changes Boston’s weekend plans right away. Crochet, 26, had made six starts and posted a 6.30 earned run average, a line that included three quality starts and three rough outings.
He said he felt fatigue in his last start and has not stopped throwing. Two of his quality starts were scoreless six-inning outings, but he was also hit hard in three starts and took a career-worst beating against the Twins at Target Field, where he allowed 11 runs, 10 earned, in 1 2/3 innings.
The workload story is not just about the ERA. Crochet’s four-seamer is averaging 95.8 mph this year, down from 96.4 mph, and his sinker is at 95.2 mph after sitting at 96 mph. His lowest single-game averages this season were 94.9 mph on the four-seamer and 94.2 mph on the sinker.
Nate Eaton Joins Boston
Boston filled the roster spot by recalling utilityman Nate Eaton from Triple-A Worcester. That gave the club another option while Crochet moved to the injured list.
The timing forced more movement behind it. Boston’s rotation for the weekend had to be reshuffled, with Connelly Early and Ranger Suarez lined up to start if everyone had stayed on turn.
Jake Bennett and Worcester
Jake Bennett was scratched from his Triple-A Worcester start the previous day, and he is already on the 40-man roster. He has a 0.86 ERA in five starts and 21 innings with Triple-A Worcester, giving the Red Sox another arm to consider as they sort out the weekend.
Boston is also carrying several pitchers on the injured list, including Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo, Kutter Crawford, Patrick Sandoval and Tanner Houck. With Crochet now joining that group, the immediate issue is simple: the rotation needs innings, and the club has already started shifting arms to get them.
