2026 Volkswagen Taos: Pricing, Specs, Trims, and What's New
2026 Volkswagen Taos

Volkswagen isn't reinventing the Taos for 2026 — it doesn't need to. Last year's full redesign did the heavy lifting, and the latest model year arrives with targeted refinements that make an already strong compact SUV sharper around the edges. Pricing starts at $27,975, with the range-topping SEL 4MOTION beginning at $37,375. It's on dealer lots now.

What's New for 2026

The updates are focused and practical. Volkswagen added wireless App-Connect as standard across all trims, upgraded the wireless phone charging pad for faster charging, and made the premium audio system standard on the SEL. Every trim now also comes equipped with rear-seat pretensioners — a safety addition that was not universal before. Small moves, but the right ones.

Engine and Performance

The 2026 Taos runs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivering 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission across all trims. Front-wheel drive is standard; 4MOTION all-wheel drive is a $1,700 upcharge on S, SE, and SE Black — and standard on the SEL.

Fuel economy reaches up to 28 city / 36 highway / 31 combined MPG on the front-wheel-drive model. The AWD version dips slightly, but still delivers respectable efficiency for the segment.

Trim Lineup

Four trims make up the 2026 Taos lineup: S, SE, SE Black, and SEL. Here's how they stack up:

Trim Key Features Starting Price
S 8" touchscreen, VW Digital Cockpit, LED lighting, 17" wheels ~$26,500
SE Dual-zone climate, heated seats, remote start, 18" wheels, adaptive headlights Mid-range
SE Black Darkened exterior styling, panoramic sunroof Mid-range
SEL Leather seating, ventilated front seats, Digital Cockpit Pro, 8-speaker audio, 4MOTION standard $37,375

Interior and Cargo

Passenger volume reaches 99.5 cubic feet — generous for the segment. Cargo space checks in at 27.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 65.9 cubic feet with the split-folding second row flat. AWD models lose a small amount of cargo volume due to the drivetrain packaging, dropping to 24.9 and 60.2 cubic feet respectively.

Technology

The standard 8-inch infotainment touchscreen includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all trims. The available VW Digital Cockpit Pro allows customization of navigation guidance, speed, travel time, and more. The myVW app connects owners to service reminders, maintenance scheduling, and roadside assistance requests.

Safety

The full IQ.DRIVE suite comes standard — blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability are all included regardless of trim. Front and rear Park Distance Control are now available as an option, a new addition for the 2026 model year.

Who's the Competition

The Taos sits in the upper-middle of the subcompact SUV pricing ladder. The Mazda CX-30 delivers more horsepower, while the Nissan Kicks, Toyota Corolla Cross, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Chevy Trax, and Trailblazer all undercut it on price. Where VW counters is on interior space, driving dynamics, and standard driver-assistance tech — a combination that continues to earn the Taos strong consumer ratings in a crowded field.
