Carl Rushworth Chants Echo Coventry City Title Celebrations
carl rushworth was the target of a loud contract chant as Coventry City wrapped up their title celebrations at the CBS Arena on Sunday. Fans sang “Sign the contract, sign the contract” during the game and again around the trophy presentation, turning the goalkeeper’s loan spell into one of the day’s main talking points.
CBS Arena backs Rushworth
Rushworth, who is on a season-long loan from Brighton, has become a familiar figure in a promotion campaign that ended with Coventry City celebrating a return to Premier League football. Frank Lampard joined in with the chant at one point, and Matt Grimes lifted the title trophy after the match.
The support came after Coventry had already secured automatic promotion at Blackburn Rovers and then clinched the title with a 5-1 win over Pompey in midweek. Sunday closed out a season that produced 93 goals and 27 wins, with the club’s travelling faithful still making themselves heard at the CBS Arena.
Rushworth’s message to fans
Rushworth responded by filming a message for the Sky Bet Championship social media team, saying, “What a feeling, honestly, I can’t put it into words,” and later adding, “To have your backing, it’s unbelievable and I am so proud of the lads and to you as fans, to get us over the line.” He also said, “I’m looking forward to what’s next, hopefully, but that’s Doug’s problem.”
The chant gave the celebration a direct transfer edge without turning the day into a negotiation. Coventry supporters were not just applauding the title; they were making their view on the goalkeeper plain while the club marked the end of the campaign.
Jamie Allen at Coventry
Jamie Allen added another layer to the day. The 31-year-old came on as an 87th minute substitute for Matt Grimes and was likely making his CBS Arena swansong after seven years at the club.
Allen joined Coventry City in the summer of 2019, and he is out of contract in the summer. He is not expected to be offered a new deal after the club’s step up to the Premier League, which made the late substitute appearance feel like a farewell in front of the same support that spent the afternoon chanting for Rushworth.
