Gallagher Could Debut in Game 5 for Canadiens Vs Lightning

Brendan Gallagher could make his 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs debut in canadiens vs lightning Game 5 at Benchmark International Arena. Montreal enters the night tied 2-2 with Tampa Bay, and the first four games have gone by without Gallagher on the ice.

Gallagher’s Possible Return

Gallagher was not on the ice with the scratches Wednesday morning, unlike earlier in the series, and that points to a possible return for Montreal’s forward group. If he gets in, the Canadiens expect him to bring energy and sandpaper while spending time around Andrei Vasilevskiy’s crease.

That area has been a problem for Montreal. The Canadiens have not done a good job of generating traffic in front of Vasilevskiy, and Gallagher has 76 playoff games to draw on if he is inserted into the lineup.

Hedman Still Out

Tampa Bay still has to manage life without Victor Hedman, who has not played since March 19 and took a leave of absence from the team on March 25. He was on the morning skate Wednesday, but remained out for Game 5.

The Lightning also bring a roster built around postseason mileage in a few spots and newer players in others. Jon Cooper said, “You talk about experience and yeah we have a core group that's been around, but we've got a huge group.... I can go through a list of guys that have never been in this environment,” then added, “So it's hard to say we're extremely experienced.”

He pointed to Corey Perry and Ryan McDonagh as “super experienced,” before listing Emil Lilleberg, Max Crozier, Declan Carlile and Charle-Edouard D'Astous as players still getting their feet wet in the League, let alone the playoffs.

Game 5 History

The tie matters because Game 5 has been the hinge point in series like this. In a best-of-7 round tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner has gone on to take the series 239 times and lost 62 times, a 79.4 percent series-win rate.

The split is strong whether the winner is at home or on the road. Home teams that win Game 5 in a tied best-of-7 series are 150-36, while road teams are 89-26.

Gallagher’s possible return and Hedman’s continued absence give Game 5 a sharper edge for a series that has been dead even through four games. Montreal is chasing a lineup boost; Tampa Bay is trying to hold the line without one of its top defensemen.
