Keir Starmer backs £25m boost over Golders Green Uk Terror Threat Level
Keir Starmer linked the Golders Green stabbing attack to the uk terror threat level debate after visiting the area and telling the public to “open their eyes to Jewish pain.” Two Jewish men were hospitalised with knife wounds after Wednesday’s attack, and the government has now moved to add £25m for Jewish community security.
Golders Green and Downing Street
Starmer visited Golders Green, where he met emergency workers and community leaders, and said new powers were needed to protect the Jewish community after the stabbing. He also said the attack was not a one-off, placing the case in a wider pattern of antisemitic threat rather than treating it as an isolated incident.
In Downing Street, Starmer said people marching with supporters of Hamas without calling it out were “venerating the murder of Jews.” He also said, “If you stand alongside people who say ‘globalise the Intifada’, you are calling for terrorism against Jews, and people who use that phrase should be prosecuted.”
£25m for Jewish security
The government said the further £25m will go toward boosting police patrols and protection around synagogues, schools and community centres. That funding lands alongside Starmer’s pledge for more money for Jewish security services and stronger powers to shut down charities that promote antisemitic extremism.
Shabana Mahmood said she would do everything in her power to keep British Jews safe. The next step the government has set out is legislation with proscription-like powers aimed at people and organisations acting on behalf of malign state-sponsored groups, with the draft laws expected to be included in the king’s speech on 13 May.
Essa Suleiman named
Police said the suspect in the stabbing of two men on Wednesday was a 45-year-old British national born in Somalia. Mahmood named the suspect as Essa Suleiman, adding a person to the case as ministers push for broader powers and tighter security around the places the government says are most exposed.
