Red, ESU officers search Trunk Road after remains found — Sootoday.com
sootoday.com reports police dog Red and emergency service unit officers searched the 1200 block of Trunk Road after people walking in a wooded area found a deceased person there last Sunday evening. Lincoln Louttit, a Sault Ste. Marie Police Service spokesperson, said the follow-up searches were part of the investigation into the discovery in the city’s east end.
Red searched the area on Tuesday with his handler, Const. Dan Greco. Louttit said, “He can scour a larger area without his handler.”
Trunk Road search
The Tuesday search gave police a wider sweep of the wooded area where the body was found. Red is trained to search for missing persons and cadavers and can go off leash, allowing him to cover ground that officers on foot might not reach as quickly.
On Wednesday, ESU officers returned to the same area at about 8 a.m. Louttit said the unit was searching “just to be thorough and check if there’s any other evidence in the area here the deceased person was located.”
East end investigation
The searches show police were still working the site after the original discovery last Sunday evening. The cause and time of death remain part of the investigation, leaving the wooded section of Trunk Road as the focus of follow-up work rather than a closed scene.
For nearby residents and people passing the area, the practical takeaway is simple: the investigation is still active at the location where the person was found, and police have already brought in both a cadaver dog and ESU officers to examine the ground more closely.
Louttit and Greco
Greco handled Red during the Tuesday search, while Louttit described why the dog and ESU were used in separate steps. The sequence suggests police were first widening the search with the dog, then returning with officers on Wednesday to look for additional evidence around the place where the deceased person was located.
