Dave Sunday Announces Charges Against 14 at Penn State

Penn State placed Delta Upsilon on interim suspension after Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced charges against 14 individuals tied to a criminal narcotics operation involving two off-campus Greek organizations. The university said its separate conduct processes will review students and the organization.

Sunday announced the charges at 10:30 a.m. today, and Penn State said the case involved mostly current or former students. Andrea Dowhower, vice president for Student Affairs, said, “We are horrified by these serious allegations against current and former students,” and added that the university would cooperate with law enforcement.

Delta Upsilon review at Penn State

When the University learns of criminal charges against a recognized student organization or a current student, the Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Response begins its own investigation. Penn State said Delta Upsilon will be reviewed through the University’s organizational conduct processes, while current students face the individual student conduct process. The University can impose discipline up to and including permanent separation for both organizations and individuals involved.

Dowhower said, “Criminal activity, including hazing, such as this has no place at our institution, and we will cooperate with law enforcement in any way we can.” She also said, “We will continue to enhance our efforts around health and safety and hazing educational efforts for all our organizations.” Student Affairs said it is moving quickly to establish additional educational and hazing prevention efforts during the first weeks of the semester.

Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon

The charges named Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon as the two off-campus Greek organizations tied to the case. Penn State said Sigma Chi is not a recognized organization and operates outside the University’s support and oversight. That leaves Delta Upsilon inside the university’s conduct system, while the allegations tied to current and former students proceed through the attorney general’s case. Gavin McKenna NHL draft buzz

For current students, the immediate change is that Penn State’s student conduct process now runs alongside the criminal case, which can lead to separate discipline from any law-enforcement outcome. The unresolved piece is the scope of the attorney general’s narcotics charges, which will determine how far the university’s review reaches across the organizations and the students named in the case.
