Cleveland Police arrest 12 men after Middlesbrough station clash
Cleveland police arrested 12 men for violent disorder after a clash at Middlesbrough railway station following the Middlesbrough v Millwall match on 3 April. The case now centres on how officers identified suspects across Teesside, after disorder broke out around the station and spread into a wider investigation.
Martin Hopps on arrests
Ch Supt Martin Hopps said the arrests showed “robust action” and said police were committed to public safety. He added: “The message is clear, if you choose to partake in violence we will not stop until you have been identified, arrested and dealt with appropriately.”
Teesside property raids
Two men were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder after the station clash on 3 April, and ten more men were arrested earlier in police raids on 11 properties across Teesside. Those searches took place in Ingleby Barwick, Thornaby, Middlesbrough and Stockton, and officers seized items of clothing as evidence.
Conditional bail
All of the men were released on conditional bail while the investigation continues. That leaves the arrests in place but keeps the case open, with the police action now tied to evidence from the station disorder and the property searches rather than the match itself.
