Nicola Coughlan Limits Bridgerton Season 5 Role as Filming Starts — Nicola Coughlan Bridgerton Season 5
Nicola Coughlan says her nicola coughlan bridgerton season 5 role will be limited now that filming has already started. Speaking on the April 29 episode of the Dish podcast, the 39-year-old said, "Season five had started filming already, so I won't be in it very much," after a run that put Penelope Bridgerton at the center of season three.
"I'm always happy to come back. I think it's a genuinely lovely job to come back to," she said. That keeps Coughlan attached to the series, but on a smaller schedule than the one she had when Penelope anchored Colin Bridgerton's friends-to-lovers storyline in season three.
Penelope After Lady Whistledown
Penelope also entered season four from a different place. Jess Brownell said in February that the character had "a giant growth arc last season" and that, "She's not the powerless girl who needs Whistledown to take back her voice anymore." Brownell added, "While she stands by everything she believes about gossip being information, gossip being power for the voiceless, she realizes that it's time for her to stop being in that role."
That leaves Coughlan with less narrative weight in season five, which is led by Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling. Hannah Dodd plays Francesca and Masali Baduza plays Michaela, signaling that the series is shifting its focus away from Penelope after her run as one of its most visible characters.
Season Five Moves Forward
Coughlan's comments also suggest a practical reality for the production: the series is already far enough along that her scenes will be brief by design. She said, "I have it so good now 'cause I come in for a few days," and added, "and I'm like, 'Yay! How is everyone? I'll see you in two months. Bye! They're working super super hard and I'm just like coming back. It's lovely."
For viewers, the takeaway is simple. Penelope is still part of Bridgerton's world, but season five is no longer built around her, and Coughlan's own schedule reflects that reduced role. The show has moved on from the story that made her central, and her next appearances will now function as a return rather than the main event.
