National Highways M4 Bridge Opening Set for June 19 Reopen
The national highways m4 bridge opening will return the A432 Badminton Road bridge over the M4 to use in June, after the old structure was demolished following damage that could not be repaired long-term or in a cost-effective manner. National Highways said the bridge will reopen to non-motorised users from the afternoon of Friday, June 19.
Traffic management measures will come off overnight so all vehicles can use the bridge from 7am on Saturday, June 20. The reopening matters on a route used by thousands of drivers every day, and Sean Walsh said the new bridge will be completed much faster than usual for a project of this size.
Sean Walsh on June reopening
Walsh, the route manager for National Highways, said: "We're delighted to say that we'll be opening the new and improved bridge this June, much faster than usual for a project of this size." He added: "This new bridge will make a significant and positive difference to the journeys of visitors, local communities, and businesses."
He also said: "Since we announced the old bridge needed to be demolished, the team have worked incredibly hard to deliver this project in just two and a half years, half of the five years it would normally take."
July 2023 to March last year
The old bridge was closed in July 2023 after investigations found damage that could not be repaired long-term or in a cost-effective manner. Preparation work started in May 2024, when the bridge was closed to motor traffic, and it stayed open for pedestrians and cyclists until it was demolished in March last year.
The new bridge required specialist working platforms known as piling pads. National Highways said some closures of the M4 will still be required in May and June to finish construction work, even as the reopening begins.
