Thermos recalls 8.2 million containers after vision loss reports
Thermos is recalling more than 8 million thermos food jars and bottles after stoppers were reported to forcefully eject and hit users. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall notice on Thursday, and consumers are urged to stop using the products immediately.
The recall covers about 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food and Beverage Bottles. Thermos has received 27 reports of stoppers striking users when the containers were opened, including 3 people who suffered permanent vision loss after being hit in the eye.
Thermos model numbers
The recalled products include the Thermos 16-oz Stainless King Food Jar SK3000, 40-oz Sportsman Food and Beverage Bottle SK3010, and 24-oz Stainless King Food Jar SK3020. The Thermos logo appears on the side of the products, and model numbers are printed on the bottom.
The items were sold in multiple colors at major retailers including Target and Walmart, and online through Amazon, Thermos and other sites. They were available from March 2008 through July 2024, at about $30 each, and were manufactured in China and Malaysia.
Pressure buildup hazard
The recalled products lack a pressure-relief mechanism. Pressure can build up when food or liquids are stored inside the containers for an extended period, and the CPSC said the stopper can forcefully eject when opened if perishable food or beverages are stored that way.
That leaves owners with a simple first step: stop using the jar or bottle, check the Thermos logo and model number on the bottom, and set it aside rather than opening it again. For households that bought these containers years ago, the recall reaches back across more than 15 years of sales and covers both food jars and beverage bottles.
