Trump to speak Friday in The Villages Florida as protests plan

Donald Trump is due to speak at a local rally in the villages florida on Friday, drawing supporters and critics into a retirement community that already treats politics as part of daily life. The visit lands in a place spread across 30,000 acres, three counties and four zip codes.

Residents say the setting is built for social life, but not every conversation stays easy. Maddy Bacher, a Villages resident and Democrat originally from Connecticut, said, “Everybody does still try to get along,” but added, “But… I find you don't socialise as much, and it's kind of difficult, because everything you do move to talk about might have a political consequence.”

Trump and The Villages

Trump is using the speech as part of his wider effort to champion his economic policies with voters ahead of the midterm elections. The community has voted for him in all three of his electoral bids, and supporters in The Villages are thrilled and honoured that he is visiting.

Bill Knudson, president of the Democratic Club, said, “Nothing turns out Democrats like Trump.” Members of the club were making signs and planning their protest, while nearly 7,000 people took part in a No Kings protest across two Villages locations last month, according to local reports.

Residents at the Squares

The Villages was founded in the 1970s and has five squares, where golf carts are a preferred mode of transport. Betty Brock said, “It's like being at a resort on a full-time basis,” while Terri Emery called it “kind of like utopia” and added, “You move here to be young; you don't move here to die and become old.”

The community is so large that getting to Trump’s location by golf cart could take about an hour at 20 miles an hour. That distance now sits beside a sharper divide: some residents are preparing for the rally, and others are preparing to show up against it.
