Mason Greenwood Told He Has to Leave Marseille

mason greenwood is being pushed toward the Marseille exit after Eric Di Meco said the 24-year-old has outgrown the club. The former Marseille full-back said Greenwood has to leave this summer, with Champions League football and a transfer market waiting in the background.

Di Meco's Marseille warning

Di Meco did not leave much room for debate. "The guy is bigger than the club; he has to leave. It's the best thing for both sides."

He also pointed to the football and the money around Greenwood, saying: "I wonder: does this guy want to stay in a project without Champions League football, with clubs coming in to watch him and offering him potentially very high salaries?"

Marseille are sixth in Ligue 1 and four points adrift of the Champions League places. They have won one of their last five games and drew 1-1 with Nice in their last outing, leaving the club with a decision to make while the season is still live.

United's sell-on clause

Greenwood joined Marseille from Manchester United in 2024 for £26.7 million, and United inserted a sell-on clause of around 50% into the deal. If Marseille sell him, United could make as much as £18.5 million from the move.

That number sits alongside Greenwood's production. He has scored 25 times and provided 10 assists across all competitions this season, including 22 goals in 2024/25, which is why Marseille have reportedly set a minimum price tag of €43 million.

Juventus interest

Juventus are among the clubs reportedly interested, and La Gazzetta dello Sport reported this week that they are ready to test Marseille's resolve. Di Meco said he expects the situation to settle through a transfer that lets Marseille recoup their investment.

"I think the story will resolve itself naturally to the benefit of both parties. I believe it will all end with a transfer in which OM recoups its investment, the most valuable in the club," he said. Marseille travel to Nantes on Saturday before finishing their campaign away to Le Harve on Sunday, 10 May, and at home to Rennes on Sunday, 17 May.
