Daniel Tupou Targets 2027 Roosters Deal in Coming Weeks
Daniel Tupou wants his future with the Sydney Roosters settled in the coming weeks, with the winger saying he wants to keep playing and sort out a new deal for 2027. The timing matters because the club’s long-term roster remains unsettled, and Tupou is one of several senior names shaping what comes next.
Tupou and Billy Slater
Tupou is also closing in on another major mark. In the coming weeks he is expected to move past Billy Slater and become the third-highest try-scorer of all time, another reminder that his output still sits near the top of the game even as contract talks continue.
He said the process is already underway with his manager. “I'm still sorting out [my future] with my manager,” Tupou said. “But I'm trying to get it sorted as soon as possible.”
Roosters roster pressure
The Roosters have lost Joseph Manu and Joseph Suaalii in recent years, while Mark Nawaqanitawase and Angus Crichton are heading back to rugby union at the end of the year. Daly Cherry-Evans, James Tedesco and Tupou are also among the players who could retire in the coming years, or as soon as this year, leaving the club with plenty to settle across its 2027 squad.
So far, the Roosters have only added Reuben Garrick to that group, and they still have plenty of spots available. That makes Tupou’s decision more than a personal call: a new deal would keep one of their most established finishers in place while the club works through the rest of its list.
Walker at the Roosters
Sam Walker is in a similar position, though he is further along in the process. He said, “Uh, no [I can't see myself playing anywhere else],” and added, “I'm really comfortable at the Sydney Roosters.”
Walker would be free to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1 if he did not re-sign with the Roosters, a deadline that gives the club an added incentive to tighten up its key contracts before the market opens wider. Tupou was even clearer about his own preference. “Nah, I probably [can't imagine myself playing somewhere else],” he said. “I think I'm too mature to go to another team and start all over again. It'd be hard.”
