Jace Jung Recalled as Tigers Place Báez and Mize on Injured List
jace jung is back on the Tigers' major-league roster after Detroit placed Javier Báez and Casey Mize on the injured list Wednesday afternoon. The move gives the club another left-handed bat and a player who can cover first, second and third while two regulars are out.
Báez Leaves After Atlanta Injury
Báez went down Tuesday in Atlanta while trying to avoid a tag from Matt Olson, then was carted off the field. He had already handled a wide defensive load this season, appearing in 17 games at shortstop, 10 in center field and three at second base before the injury shifted Detroit into emergency planning.
Mize also exited Tuesday's game, grimacing after multiple pitches and leaving after fielding a dribbler in the third inning. With both players sidelined, the Tigers answered by recalling Jung and Enmanuel De Jesus, a move that keeps the roster moving even as the injury list keeps growing.
Jace Jung Brings Left-Handed Balance
Jung was recalled mostly for his left-handed bat, and the timing lines up with Detroit's schedule. The Tigers are likely to face right-handed starters in four of their next five games, which gives him a clearer path to at-bats than he had in Toledo.
At Triple-A Toledo, Jung was hitting.222 through 99 at-bats. He has hit.190 in 55 career MLB games, so the call-up is as much about fit and opportunity as it is about production.
Detroit's Injury Cover
De Jesus was sent down seven days ago after posting a 10.13 ERA in his first six regular-season games, then returned when the Tigers needed another arm. Justin Verlander is already on the injured list with left hip inflammation, which leaves Detroit juggling multiple absences at once.
That is the strain on the roster now: one infielder hurt in Atlanta, one starter leaving a game in the third inning, and a bench built to absorb both losses. Jung gets the opening, and Detroit gets a player who can cover several spots while the club keeps sorting out the rest of the infield and rotation.
