Ipswich Goal Ends Millwall’s Boylesports Promotion Bid at Three Minutes
Millwall’s Boylesports push for automatic promotion ended after three minutes, when Ipswich scored at home against QPR and left the Lions needing more than their 2-0 win over Oxford United. The result sent Millwall into the Championship playoffs after they finished third at The Den on the final day.
The Den and the early blow
Millwall had done their job against Oxford United, but they needed a better result at home than Ipswich managed against QPR to reach the Premier League automatically. Ipswich’s goal after three minutes changed that picture immediately, and Millwall were left to settle for third place despite the 2-0 win.
The Den was sold out at kick-off, and the home crowd watched the final-day arithmetic unfold in real time. Millwall’s path was always tied to another match, and the earliest decisive moment belonged to Ipswich.
Millwall’s playoff finish
Third place gave Millwall a playoff spot, not the automatic promotion place they were chasing. A first top-tier appearance in 36 years had been on the line, but the early Ipswich goal closed that door before Millwall’s result could change it.
That left the Lions with a familiar second route to promotion and a clean league finish to build from. The 2-0 win over Oxford still mattered; it just no longer carried the prize they needed when the afternoon began.
Hull, Southampton and Coventry
Hull joined Millwall in the playoff places after beating Norwich 2-1 at home, with Oli McBurnie scoring in both halves. Sergej Jakirovic called the finish a huge step for his side after the comeback win.
Southampton ended fourth after a 3-1 win at Preston, stretching their unbeaten Championship run to 19 matches. Taylor Harwood-Bellis headed their opener in the 12th minute, Ross Stewart added the second after 47 minutes, Lewis Dobbin replied on the hour and Cyle Larin finished the scoring in stoppage time.
Coventry also closed strongly, beating Watford 4-0 with an Ellis Simms hat-trick and a Viktor Torp piledriver. That result took them to 95 points and 97 goals, a mark that underlined how tight the top end of the division stayed on the final day.
