Varas Laments San Diego FC's 6-Game Skid, 11th-Place Slide — Mls
San Diego FC’s mls slump has turned a fast start into a six-game winless run and an 11th-place position in the Western Conference after five straight April defeats. The club had finished first in the conference with 63 points in its inaugural campaign, but the current slide has come fast after a 4-0 loss at Toluca on March 13.
Varas Sees Razor-Thin Margins
Mikey Varas called the situation "Privilege problems, for sure" and said the team’s results have gone against it by a razor-thin margin. He also described the run as "one of the more beautiful challenges that I’ve faced," adding that he views it as "absolutely amazing."
Varas said the team has been dealing with red-card situations, injury situations, heavy minutes with 10 players, a shorter preseason, and the disappointment of being knocked out in a tough competition. San Diego have picked up seven red cards across all competitions, a number that has added strain to a squad still only 15 months into its on-field existence.
Ingvartsen Targets The First Line
Marcus Ingvartsen pointed to the pressure work that has slipped in recent matches. "It's more our level that has been dropping a little bit; we haven't been able to fix that first line of pressure," he said, after opponents have repeatedly faced San Diego with man-v-man, high pressure.
The drop is sharper because the club set a high bar last season, then reached the Western Conference Final in the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs. That backdrop made April’s five straight defeats harder to absorb, especially after a start to the current campaign that included Concacaf Champions Cup matches against Pumas UNAM and Deportivo Toluca.
LAFC Arrive Saturday Night
San Diego’s next test comes at home against LAFC in the Walmart Saturday Showdown at 9:30 pm ET on Apple TV. For a team that has already been hit by red cards, injuries, and a thin margin in close results, that match offers a quick chance to stop the slide before the standings gap grows any wider.
