Coleman Wong Beats Sun Fajing 6-3, 6-4 to Reach Jiujiang Final

Coleman Wong Chak-lam moved into the Jiujiang final on Saturday, beating Sun Fajing 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 25 minutes. The win sends the Hong Kong player into his sixth Challenger Tour final and sets up a meeting with Australian Adam Walton.

Wong, the world No 122, kept his run in mainland China intact by handling Sun in straight sets after earlier wins over Mikhail Kukushkin, Rio Noguchi and Bu Yunchaokete without dropping a set. That sequence left him one match from the title and extended a clean week against three different opponents before the final.

Sun arrived with form of his own, having won 11 of his previous 12 matches before losing to Wong. The result ended that streak and left Wong carrying the stronger recent record into Sunday’s final.

Walton is not a new opponent for Wong. Last August, Wong beat the Australian in four sets in the US Open second-round match, giving him a head-to-head win to draw on before they meet again in Jiujiang.

Wong’s coach, James Allemby, has framed the final as part of a longer climb rather than an endpoint. “He has bigger aspirations than simply winning Challenger titles and he’s going to use this opportunity to improve for a fifth successive day, and to be best prepared for the challenges the main tour holds for him.”

Allemby also said, “The final is just another stop on the journey towards maximising his potential. Previously, his perception of a final was far too romanticised, which creates mental hurdles.” That makes Sunday’s match less about a single trophy and more about how Wong handles another step at the level he is trying to reach.

For Wong, the immediate task is simple: turn a week of straight-set wins into one more result against Walton. The broader test is whether the same patience and consistency that carried him through Jiujiang can hold up again when the final starts.
