Environment Canada issues special weather statement for Halifax rain — Weather Halifax

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for weather halifax on Sunday, warning that 25 to 40 mm of rain could fall in the Halifax area. The system was expected to bring the heaviest rain Sunday afternoon and last until early Monday morning.

As of 6 a.m., a low pressure system was forecast to track over eastern Nova Scotia. Environment Canada said there could be more rain in the heaviest showers, and its statement also cited the possibility of thunderstorms in central and western parts of the province.

Halifax Area Rainfall

The Halifax area sits in the part of the province expected to get the most concentrated rainfall from the system. Environment Canada said the rain could total 25 to 40 mm, with additional rain possible in the heaviest showers. The statement covered Nova Scotia, not only Halifax.

The weather service also said, "Wet snow may mix in at times over higher elevations" and that easterly gusts as high as 8 km per hour were anticipated later in the day. Those higher-elevation snow showers were part of the same system moving across the province.

Sunday Afternoon System

The heaviest rain was expected to begin Sunday afternoon, after the low pressure system tracks over eastern Nova Scotia. Environment Canada said the period of significant rainfall would continue into early Monday morning, giving the system a narrow window for a cleanup before the start of the new week.

People in the Halifax area were told to clear storm drains and gutters of debris ahead of the heaviest rain. That step is aimed at keeping water moving during the part of the day when the rain is expected to be strongest.

Monday In Halifax

Environment Canada forecast a mix of sun and cloud on Monday, with clearing near noon and a high of 13. The agency also said Monday would be cooler along the coast.

For Halifax residents, the immediate task is simple: prepare for a wet Sunday afternoon, then look for improving conditions by midday Monday.
