More Than 32,000 Cyclists Fill Five Boro Bike Tour Streets
More than 32,000 cyclists are expected to roll through the five boro bike tour on Sunday, May 3, as New York City prepares for the 46th TD Five Boro Bike Tour. The event will send riders through all five boroughs on streets normally open to vehicle traffic, with road access controlled by the New York Police Department.
Lower Manhattan Start Waves
The tour begins in Lower Manhattan with staggered start waves. Riders heading southbound to the start line are directed to use Broadway for east side entry points, while those traveling northbound should use the Hudson River Greenway for west side access.
Participants assigned to different waves are advised to ride together in the latest wave. That setup keeps the start organized as the crowd builds at the line and the city manages closures around the route.
Sixth Avenue By Noon
Officials say Sixth Avenue is expected to reopen to traffic by noon on Sunday. Until then, the closures leave key streets under NYPD direction as the bike tour moves through the city.
The 46th edition has become one of the city’s biggest single-day road-use changes because it runs across all five boroughs and uses streets that are usually reserved for vehicles. For drivers and anyone moving through Lower Manhattan, the practical takeaway is simple: plan around the start corridor early, and expect Sixth Avenue to return to traffic by midday.
