Andy Robertson Backed for Chelsea Move After Liverpool Exit

Andy Robertson is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, and Didi Hamann has backed Chelsea to move for the left-back if the chance comes. Liverpool have decided against offering the vice-captain a contract extension, even after a nine-year spell at Anfield.

Hamann on Chelsea’s experience

Hamann said Chelsea need experience and put Robertson in that bracket. “I think Chelsea need experience,” he said. “If you've got good young players, you need experienced players to bring them on.”

He added that Chelsea’s current squad can lose control when games turn against them: “Sometimes when things go badly, as they have now, the run of form is dreadful, you need experienced players who can calm young players down, where a young player looks up and somebody says to him, ‘Listen, lad, don't worry about it. We'll be fine.’” He also said: “I don't think they've got that.”

Robertson’s Liverpool change

Robertson has played 34 times in all competitions this season, but Milos Kerkez took his spot as Liverpool’s first-choice left-back last summer. That shift has left Robertson heading toward the exit after a long run as one of the club’s senior figures.

Hamann was direct about how he sees the fit. “A player like Andy Robertson, they should take him in a heartbeat,” he said. “I think he's exactly the type of player Chelsea needs or is crying out for, with one or two more experienced players, they’ve got to give themselves a chance.” He later added: “Robertson, I'd take him at Chelsea in a heartbeat if he was interested.”

Tottenham and the summer race

There has been nothing to suggest Chelsea will move for Robertson, but Tottenham have already tried. Spurs attempted to sign him during the January transfer window, and Liverpool opted to keep hold of him at that point.

Spurs could make another play in the summer, although their chances of convincing Robertson would depend on Tottenham retaining Premier League status. Chelsea’s name now sits alongside that possibility, but for Robertson the key point is simpler: Liverpool have moved on, and a transfer decision is coming once the season ends.
