D. K. Joshi Leads Two Guinness World Records Attempts at Swaraj Dweep

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are set to enter guinness world records twice on May 2 and May 3 at Swaraj Dweep, with Lieutenant Governor D. K. Joshi taking part in both attempts. The plan is built around one clear business goal: draw international visibility to the islands as a scuba diving and eco-tourism destination.

On May 2, the first attempt will target the Largest Flag Unfurled Underwater using a 60m x 40m Indian tricolour near Radha Nagar Beach. On May 3, divers will try for the Tallest Human Stack Underwater with a 10-metre vertical formation near the island’s lighthouse jetty. Those are not symbolic stunts in isolation; they are being staged as destination marketing with a record book attached.

Radha Nagar Beach and the Jetty

Joshi’s participation in both events gives the attempt a public face, but the effort itself is built on trained divers, technical experts, and multi-agency coordination. Officials said the events are being designed to meet international safety standards and Guinness guidelines, which means the record bid depends on precision as much as spectacle.

The setting is part of the pitch. The islands offer underwater visibility of up to 30–40 metres, along with coral ecosystems and marine life that include reef sharks, turtles, and manta rays. Barren Island, identified as India’s only active volcano, adds another diving draw to the region’s existing profile.

Tourism on the Line

Tourism remains a critical economic driver in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and officials expect the record attempts to generate international visibility. With nearly 86% forest cover and a coastline already marketed around low-impact travel, the islands are trying to turn one weekend of headline-grabbing diving into longer-term attention from visitors who book around distinct experiences, not generic beach travel.

The immediate test now is execution: two days, two separate underwater formats, and no margin for sloppy coordination. If the attempts land as planned, Swaraj Dweep will not just add two entries to a record chase; it will strengthen the islands’ case as a serious scuba destination rather than a scenic one.
