Weatherzone forecasts 10-20cm snow for Victorian, NSW resorts

weatherzone says a brief spell of wintry weather will hit Tasmania, Victoria and southern NSW on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th, with snow forecast for major resorts and higher ground after a strong cold front crosses overnight Wednesday. The forecast covers cold southwesterly winds, showers and snow down to lower elevations in parts of Victoria and Tasmania.

Across the two days, major resorts in Victoria and New South Wales are expected to collect about 10-20cm of snow. The Tasmanian Central Plateau and the higher peaks in southwest Victoria are forecast to receive about 3-8cm. The freezing level is set to hover around 1000 metres on Thursday, with snow possible as low as 800 metres in Victoria and Tasmania.

Victorian Alps and Snowy Mountains

Snow is forecast on Thursday down to low levels across the Victorian Alps, the Snowy Mountains and the Tasmania Highlands. Snow showers are also likely across the higher peaks from the Grampians to the Central Highlands and south across the Otway Ranges in southwest Victoria.

A second cold front early Friday is expected to keep the cold and gusty winds going through the day. By then, snowfall is expected to contract to higher elevations across northeast Victoria and NSW's Snowy Mountains, with snow flurries possibly lasting into Saturday morning about the higher peaks.

Sheep Farmers and Drivers

The cold, wet and windy conditions may bring a Weather Warning for Sheep Farmers in Victoria, Tasmania and southern NSW. Capital cities and regional townships across southeast Australia will feel the worst of the cold on Thursday, and to a slightly lesser extent on Friday.

Drivers heading through the higher mountains face the sharpest practical impact from the forecast, with wet roads and falling snow expected to make travel hazardous. Temperatures across southeast Australia are expected to rise later in the weekend, before moving closer to average for May early next week.
