Niklas Edin Ends Career After World Championship Gold
Niklas Edin has ended his curling career one month after winning world championship gold. The move closes a run that included Olympic medals in 2014, 2018 and 2022, and it splits up Lag Edin after almost 20 years in different formations.
Niklas Edin After the Gold
Edin said the title from one month earlier was his last. In a post on Instagram, he called the decision “Det är ett tufft och skrämmande beslut”.
He also said he is stopping while he is ahead and wants time to explore what else is out there. That is a sharp exit for a curler described as one of the most successful of all time, especially after the world championship gold and a recent award from King Carl XVI Gustaf for his achievements on the ice.
Lag Edin Breaks Apart
The retirement ends a long stretch for Lag Edin, which has existed for almost 20 years in different constellations. His decision means the team will be split up.
Edin said he expects to stay close to curling through watching, coaching and commenting, and he hopes to play in Rock League, the newly started professional league based in Canada. “Oroa er inte, jag kommer att vara nära sporten, titta, coacha, kommentera och förhoppningsvis spela i Rock League,” he wrote. He also added: “Jag hoppas att ni njöt av resan!? Det gjorde jag verkligen!”
Olympic Medals and the Exit
His record gives the retirement extra weight. Edin won Olympic bronze in 2014, silver in 2018 and gold in 2022, then added the world championship title one month ago before deciding to stop.
For supporters of Lag Edin, the next step is simple even if the split is not: the lineup that carried the team through nearly two decades is ending, and Edin will move into a different relationship with the sport he has just left as a player.
