UAE says it intercepted missiles as Fujairah site fire injures three

The UAE said its air defenses intercepted ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones from Iran as a drone attack sparked a fire at a Fujairah petroleum industrial site. Three Indian nationals were injured and taken to hospital with moderate injuries. Fujairah sits near the Strait of Hormuz, where cargo traffic and ship security have already been under strain.

UAE Ministry of Defense statement

The UAE Ministry of Defense said: "The Ministry of Defense confirms that the sounds heard in various parts of the country are the result of the UAE air defense systems intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones." The statement described the interception as the source of sounds heard in different parts of the country, while the petroleum site fire in Fujairah showed that the attack reached a sensitive energy facility.

Fujairah petroleum site injuries

Three Indian nationals were injured in the drone attack on Fujairah’s petroleum industrial site. The men were taken to hospital, and their injuries were termed moderate. That is the clearest identified human toll in the incident, even as the broader air defense operation was unfolding across the UAE.

Gulf shipping incidents

As the Fujairah fire was being reported, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations received a report of a fire aboard a cargo vessel in the Gulf. The vessel reported fire in its engine room 36 nautical miles north of Dubai, and all crew were safe and accounted for. UKMTO also reported another incident west of Mina Saqr, adding a second shipping-related report in the same area.

Strait of Hormuz response

Iranian officials said they were drafting a mechanism for managing the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials also said the Strait of Hormuz would not return to previous conditions and that hostile vessels would not be allowed to pass. Former US Assistant Secretary of State General Mark Kimmitt said the US would need to provide protection for ships coming through the Strait of Hormuz, adding: "The Iranians, as we’ve seen today, are still making threatening noises. Clearly, if we are going to have those ships come through they are going to need protection."

Kimmitt also said: "a carrier task group has a series of ships outside and around that aircraft carrier protected, and they have various measures for counter drone, anti-aircraft, anti-submarine" and "In this case what we’d see is that the US navy would be providing a protective cordon and escort to those ships as they go through the Strait." The next concrete issue is whether shipping protection around the Strait of Hormuz tightens further after the UAE’s reported interception and the Gulf vessel reports.
