Phil Parkinson Sees Hull City Win Three-Club Shootout
Phil Parkinson saw Hull City take the last Championship play-off place on the final day after a three-club shootout with Wrexham and Derby County. The live table turned several times before Hull got over the line with a victory against Norwich. Wrexham began the day in sixth, but the final hour kept changing who sat in the last play-off spot.
Hull City, Wrexham, Derby County
Three clubs kicked off at 12:30 BST with one remaining Championship play-off place available. Wrexham were chasing a fourth-successive promotion under Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, while Hull and Derby were forced to track every goal from their own matches and the others around them.
Tommy Conway opened the scoring for Middlesbrough at Wrexham at 12:34 BST. Two minutes later, Sam Szmodics put Derby County ahead against Sheffield United with a point-blank finish. Those two early goals pushed Derby up and left Wrexham trying to recover before the live table shifted again.
Goals at 12:58 BST
Josh Windass levelled for Wrexham with a free-kick at 12:58 BST, and Norwich went ahead at Hull at the same time. Oli McBurnie answered within two minutes for Hull, keeping them in the race while the table still refused to settle.
Wrexham then moved ahead against Middlesbrough at 13:11 BST through Sam Smith, only for David Strelec to equalise two minutes later. That Middlesbrough goal sent Derby back up to sixth at 13:19 BST, underlining how little margin separated the three clubs as the final-day picture kept flipping.
Hull Finish the Job
Hull’s victory against Norwich finally settled the issue and secured sixth place for the play-offs. Derby and Wrexham both spent time in the top six on a day when the live standings changed with each key goal, but Hull were the side that stayed standing when the dust settled.
For Wrexham, the afternoon carried the weight of a fourth-successive promotion push and the pressure of starting the day in sixth. For Derby, Szmodics’ opener briefly looked enough to move them into the decisive position, but the table would not stay still long enough for that to last.
Hull now move on with the final Championship play-off place, while Wrexham and Derby are left with the frustration of spending part of the day inside the bracket and finishing outside it.
