Rylan Clark Stops Radio 2 Quiz After Mix-Up and Hands Over to Lotte Uttley
Rylan Clark stopped the Radio 2 Couch Potatoes quiz on Saturday after a live mix-up, then handed the segment to Lotte Uttley and Sally Boazman. rylan clark had already been pushed into a corner by the confusion before he decided to step out of the chair.
The trouble began when he introduced the first contestant as Matt, then learned he was actually speaking to Mark, the previous champion from a few weeks ago. Mark cut in with: “It’s Mark! I’m Mark, I’m the champion from a few weeks ago!”
Couch Potatoes on Saturday
Clark tried to keep the quiz moving, but the live handover exposed how quickly a small script error can derail a segment built on timing. He said, “I was just told that I was speaking to Matt, then I was speaking to Mark and then four people started talking... and it all just got a bit confusing.”
He also told producer Simon, “just admit you got it wrong,” before turning to the mic and saying, “Oh no, this is ridiculous! Right, hang on a minute, is there a ghost or something? What is going on? Everyone stop! Stop, collaborate and listen, stop!”
The ARIAS snub
A listener then moved the show from technical confusion to awards politics, saying, “Firstly, how you're not up for an award for your show, I just don't know!” Clark answered, “Always snubbed at The ARIAS even though I host the thing. It kills me, I'm the host of it and I can't even get a nomination!”
That complaint sat on top of the on-air chaos and gave the moment a sharper edge: this was not just a comic stumble, but a presenter airing frustration about a weekend show that still has no award recognition. For a broadcaster who fronted the event itself, the gap between hosting and being nominated is the most awkward line in the story.
Lotte Uttley steps in
Clark then told Lotte Uttley and Sally Boazman to take over, saying, “Lotte, Sally, do you know what? Lotte, for today, do you know what's going to happen? You're going to ask the questions, I'm going to be a lifeline. I'm done! Come round here, come round here, now you can see what I have to put up with!”
Boazman replied, “Rylan's having a tantrum,” and Clark shot back, “I've had enough!” Uttley took over hosting the quiz, and Clark said he was proud of her for stepping into the role. That mattered because Uttley had already said she felt nervous about reading aloud live on air because of her dyslexia, so the handover put her under the sort of live pressure Radio 2 usually tries to smooth away.
