Lou Trivino Joins Orioles on Major League Deal

The Orioles signed lou trivino to a major league deal and optioned Trey Gibson to make room on the active roster. The move adds a 34-year-old right-hander to a bullpen thinned by injuries, with Baltimore carrying 11 players on the injured list and four relievers among them.

Trivino Reaches Baltimore

Trivino landed in Baltimore after opting out of a minor league deal with the Phillies a few days earlier. He had signed that deal in the offseason, skipped his first opt-out chance, then reported to Triple-A Lehigh Valley before taking the second opt-out and becoming available.

His short stay at Lehigh Valley gave the Orioles a recent performance line to weigh. Trivino posted a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings there, striking out 35.7% of hitters while walking 7.1% and getting ground balls at a 50% clip.

Phillies Exit, Orioles Opening

The big-league resume is deeper than the Triple-A sample. Trivino has worked 332 1/3 innings in the majors with a 3.87 ERA, a 23.5% strikeout rate, a 10.4% walk rate and a 45.3% ground ball rate, along with 37 saves and 57 holds.

There is also the recent injury history. Injuries kept him out of the majors in 2023 and 2024, and he finished the 2025 season on the Phillies’ big league roster before becoming an Article XX(B) free agent after the season. Last year in the majors, he carried a 3.97 ERA, a 17.9% strikeout rate and a 33.8% ground ball rate, both below league average.

Orioles Bullpen Pressure

Baltimore’s relief group already had multiple names on the shelf. Félix Bautista was expected to miss most or all of the 2026 campaign after shoulder surgery, Ryan Helsley was out with elbow inflammation, and Yaramil Hiraldo and Colin Selby were also on the injured list.

That left the Orioles using their open 40-man roster spot without needing a corresponding move there, while Gibson headed out to create the active roster space. The signing gives Baltimore another veteran option for late innings and protection against more thin nights in the bullpen.
