Sombr’s Met Gala Debut Took More Than 500 Hours
Sombr made his 2026 Met Gala debut in a custom Valentino look by Alessandro Michele, and the cape alone took more than 500 hours of work. The singer called the night a step from anticipation to arrival after growing up in New York and watching the carpet from the outside.
Valentino’s Silver-Gray Cape
The cape was hand-embroidered in tulle and chiffon, built in a degradé of silver and gray hues, and finished with sequins that Sombr said were “sick.” He also said, “Every detail was a revelation.” That level of construction turns a red-carpet appearance into a labor statement as much as a style one, especially when the garment is expected to carry the first Met Gala impression.
Sombr described the goal plainly: “I wanted to be a ‘canvas with a point of view’ for the creativity of Alessandro Michele.” He added, “Fashion is art, and art is about expressing emotion. The idea (and the result) was pure emotion.” The custom Valentino look matched that brief with a lamé lace top, asymmetrical crepe de chine and satin motif, and trousers trimmed at the waist and sides.
From Vogue World 2025
In 2025, Sombr wore a golden Valentino suit to Vogue World 2025: Hollywood, a clearer sign that the label has become part of his red-carpet identity. He has also been building a reputation for a flamboyant-cool look that leans on glitzy rock-and-roll suits, so the Met Gala debut reads less like a costume change than a sharper version of a pattern already in motion.
Anna Wintour Night
Sombr said, “When I actually saw the look in reality, and could touch it and talk about it with Michele - for me this was magic.” He closed with the most direct celebrity-level perk of the evening: “Oh, and saying hi to Anna Wintour.” For a first Met Gala appearance, the result was not just entry onto the carpet but a visible upgrade in fashion positioning, with Valentino and Michele placing him in a more formal style lane.
