Chase Petty Recalled as Reds Start Monday With Cubs
chase petty is back in the Reds’ rotation plans for Monday night, and the club sent Zach Maxwell to Triple-A Louisville to make room. The move gives Cincinnati a young starter for a road game at Wrigley Field after three straight losses.
Petty Gets Regular Turn
Terry Francona said the assignment fits Petty’s normal schedule. “This is his regular turn,” he said.
The manager also tied the move to the extra day of rest Petty has been getting. “He's been pitching much better on the extra day [of rest], so that's why they took him out early the other day -- to try and mimic that as much as you can.”
Petty has already shown the range that makes him a usable option and a volatile one. He appeared in three games for the Reds last season, starting with a major league debut in which he gave up nine runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings, walked two batters and struck out three.
Petty’s Recent Line
His other early looks were uneven too. On May 11, he allowed four runs on six hits in three innings, walked six batters and struck out four. On June 21, he came on in relief and gave up one unearned run in an extra-innings loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
The last outing was his sharpest. On April 29, Petty threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowed two hits, walked three and struck out four.
He works with five pitches, led by a slider he throws 32% of the time. His sinker comes in at 23%, his four-seam fastball at 22%, his changeup at 12% and his sweeper at 11%.
Reds Turn to Cabrera
Petty’s Monday night assignment comes against Edward Cabrera of the Cubs. For Cincinnati, the call is straightforward: a recalled arm, a roster spot opened, and a starter on regular rest after the club dropped three straight.
What Petty does in that turn will shape the next decision more than the recall itself. A clean outing would give the Reds a needed fifth-day look at a pitcher they have already tested in multiple roles.
