Vivek Ramaswamy seeks Ohio GOP nomination with Acton ahead

vivek ramaswamy is seeking to lock in the Republican nomination for Ohio governor as voting moves toward November’s election. The former Republican presidential candidate is positioning himself for a costly fall campaign against Dr Amy Acton, who is running unopposed for the Democrats.

The race comes in a year when every statewide executive office in Ohio is open because of term limits. That has made the governor’s contest the focal point so far, even as the state also has a competitive US Senate race and closely fought US House races.

Ohio Republican endorsement

Ramaswamy entered state politics early last year with national name recognition from his 2024 GOP presidential campaign. His national profile, tech industry connections and proximity to Trump helped him win the Ohio Republican Party’s endorsement, which cleared a prospective field that included the sitting state attorney general, state treasurer and lieutenant governor.

That endorsement left him as the party’s front-runner heading into the primary. He still faces Casey Putsch, a car designer and YouTube provocateur described as a long-shot challenger.

Acton and November

Acton, a former state health director, is the Democratic nominee for governor and is running unopposed on that side. Ramaswamy has spent much of his campaign focused on November’s election, where he would face Acton in what is expected to be an expensive statewide race.

Jessica Taylor of Cook Political Report called Ramaswamy “a polarizing figure” and said his first ad featuring his wife and children appeared aimed at softening his image. “What certainly indicated to me that there’s just a likability problem for him was anytime you see a candidate’s first ad featuring their wife and children. It certainly looks like it’s trying to soften his image as a candidate,” Taylor said.

Vivek Ramaswamy challenge

The immediate question for Ramaswamy is whether he turns his endorsement and national profile into a primary win before shifting fully to Acton and the fall campaign. The state’s open offices and the scale of the race have put the Ohio governor contest at the center of this cycle, with the Republican nomination serving as the first test.
